Education and ICT

ICT is a powerful tool. It can persuade people, convince people, and of course it can move people in some way. It can help people learn more things since at the very first place, it disseminates information.

But what if ICT is used in education? Would it be more fun if we studied using ICT?

The answer: YES!

ICT is broad and it can adjust into an academic setting easily.

How can we use ICT in our academic life?

By reading this article to have answers for your assignment, yes, you are using ICT in your academic life.

When your teacher uses PowerPoint Presentations on his/her lecture, he/she is using ICT.

Teachers nowadays uses slides, charts and documents for their subjects.

Schools are using computers and television sets to improve their facilities.

The Effectiveness of ICT in Education

Anytime, anywhere.

You can learn anytime and anywhere, just search it on the Internet or contact your favorite teacher and discuss things.

Access to remote learning resources.

Teachers no longer use print-outs and bulky handouts on giving their students a lecture – they just post it on a group page and then you can access it neatly and paperless. With the Internet, you can search up your lesson that you can’t understand and watch a lecture about it.

ICTs help prepare individuals for the workplace.

Technological literacy, or the ability to use ICTs effectively and efficiently, is needed to compete with the globalization that is happening. Thus, the students need to be equipped and trained with the facilities that they will face on the workplace.

ICT helps many things in our daily life to improve, such as Education. Therefore, we should use ICT responsibly to have a better future that is ahead of us.

Advantages and Disadvantages of ICT

You may have stumbled upon this acronym on school, work, or maybe in a very peculiar setting. Even this acronym became a title for a course/subject.

As a curious human being, you may have wondered what is ICT at all (or not, as you would contradict what would I say).

The acronym ICT stands up for Information and Communications Technology. ICT mainly focuses on communication and disseminating information. It has a broad spectrum, ranging from television airings and radio broadcasts to using the world wide web.

But then, every thing has advantages and disadvantages. What could they be?

ICT covers wireless and computer technology which have changed the way the world works.

These are the advantages of Information and Communications Technology.

Having ICT around is very efficient for us people who use it. We can call people 24/7, we can do multitasking and we can even talk to many people at the same time.

Shared resources

Different users can access the same program, and it is also applicable with hardware such as faxes, printers and photocopiers.

ICT improves the quality of learning as well as it motivates the students more. It is also a great tool for the teachers to communicate with their students more.

It’s easy to monitor work as well as communications and recreational activities.

The disadvantages usually roots in the architectural side of ICT.

These are the disadvantages of Information and Communications Technology.

User competence

As systems become more and more complicated, users need to adapt and learn more things.

Networks are vulnerable from system hacking. Viruses spread fast and it is sometimes under a form of a spam e-mail and a malicious software.

If one part of the system is down, it will also affect the others. For example, if your WiFi router is down, your laptops, smartphones and other devices can’t access the Internet.

In this generation, people prefer communicating through media rather than communicating through human interaction. It isolates people from others, creating a barrier between others and it doesn’t promote innovation at all.

All things have advantages and disadvantages. It’s better to use them as a tool instead of comparison so that we can improve the technology that lies within our surroundings.

The Role of ICT in Recent History: Yolanda People Finder

On the 8th day of November, year 2013, people are living their lives peacefully until a massive tragedy shook their innocent lives.

Typhoon Haiyan, also known as Typhoon Yolanda, was one of the strongest tropical cyclones ever recorded in the world history. It killed a total number of 6,300 people in the Philippines.

The vast use of ICT had a great impact in terms of informing others on what is happening during this calamity. The typhoon is talked about on social networking sites and the storm became a trend world wide, dubbing that Typhoon Yolanda is one of the strongest typhoons in world history.

A Facebook post where this user gives tips on helping out the victims of the super typhoon.

Even finding people who is affected by the storm is easy with the internet. With just a few clicks away, you’ll know immediately what your loved ones are doing.

Aside from the social media, Google offered a help to the Filipino people by allowing them to use their web application called Google Person Finder.

Google Person Finder is an open source web application that provides a message board for survivors, family, and loved ones affected by a natural disaster to post and search for information about each other’s status and updates. It was first created by Google engineers in response to the 2010 Haiti earthquake.

Aside from the Philippines, Google also deployed their project to countries such as Haiti, Chile, Pakistan, USA, Japan, New Zealand, Thailand and Nepal.

The interface of Google Person Finder

This web application helped thousands of people affected by the typhoon. It is also easy to use – just have an access on the internet or send a message on the numbers indicated on the website.

This kind of innovation greatly helped not only the ones who are in a disaster but the whole world. Simple innovations like this can lead into something greater. What if on the next generations, we can actually track our loved ones and know their current situation right away in spite of distance? What if on the near future, there would be a drone that scans areas in order to  find people? There are many possibilities.

ICT can be a pathway to get access to information, regardless of its content. It improved our way of living, as well as the way we respond with disasters such as Typhoon Yolanda.

ICT helped thousands of people. If it weren’t for this innovation, it would be so hard to keep in touch with everyone and everything in the planet.

And that folks, is the role of ICT in recent history such as Typhoon Yolanda.
